. Em uma verdadeira batalha contra Pierre Herbert, o brasileiro fez história e venceu o francês por 3 sets a 0, parciais de 7/6, 7/6 e 6/4. Com o triunfo marcante, o carioca de apenas 18 anos se garantiu na terceira fase do Grand Slam.

O jogo
João Fonseca teve um ótimo início de partida, quebrando o saque de Humbert logo na primeira oportunidade para abrir 2 a 1 no placar. Mas o francês devolveu a quebra, empatando o primeiro set em 2/2. Hebert venceu no saque de João no sexto game, mas o brasileiro empatou de imediato. Forçando o saque na reta final do set, Fonseca conseguiu dois aces no tiebreak para vencer por 7 a 4 e levar a primeira parcial, em 54 minutos de partida.
O tom de equilíbrio marcou o início do segundo set, com os dois jogadores apostando na variação de golpes e na movimentação. O brasileiro voltou a emplacar mais dois aces no começo, mas também cometeu duas duplas faltas. A exemplo da primeira parcial, o segundo set precisou ser decidido no tiebreak e a disputa foi dramática. O francês, abriu 3 a 0, mas Fonseca buscou a virada e chegou a 6 a 4. Com o saque na mão, ele fechou o jogo e levou também o segundo set, que teve 1h20min de duração.
No terceiro set, João Fonseca manteve sua intensidade dentro de quadra, tanto no saque como no rallies. Do outro lado da quadra, Hebert perdeu rendimento no serviço. No sétimo game, o brasileiro conseguiu uma quebra e manteve a vantagem até o final da parcial para fechar o jogo com um 6/4.
